Get to Know Lauren Ionta

How did I get into this career?

I found out I wanted to become a counselor after attending my own therapy as a child. I loved the intentional one-on-one time, and experiencing first hand the benefit of an adult who truly cared for my mental health needs. Of course, as a child I just thought it was a time to play with cool toys (shout out to moon sand) and talk to an adult who didn’t minimize my feelings or shut me down.

Hindsight and maturity has revealed the deeper work the counselor implemented in our sessions. No matter what other career I considered in school I kept coming back to a job that allows you to not only learn the intricacies of a person’s world, but provide tools that help people feel like they have a choice in their wellness journey.

What is my favorite thing about counseling?

In a world that is waiting for people to slip up in their speech and actions, I love that I offer a space for people to be completely themselves—sitting in the good, the bad, and the ugly. Spaces like this are disappearing, and I believe its causing people to become strangers to themselves. I love that all of the counseling tips and tricks only “work” when everyone in the room is willing to approach their problems with honesty and a willingness to adapt. I also feel very passionate about ensuring that people believe that they are never alone and someone is out there who genuinely cares about them.

What do I like to do when I’m not at Atlanta Wellness Collective?

My absolute favorite downtime activity is reading! Kindle Unlimited has saved our household (both financially and spatially). You’ll never catch me without a book in my purse. I also love to spend time with my husband (Jack) and our Australian Shepherd (Obi). Running, rock-climbing, and walking are some of our favorite hobbies that we share together.

What do I hope for my clients?

I hope that my clients feel seen and heard in the therapeutic relationship. This is a place for you to explore everything you’ve gone through that’s brought you here today. You have a right to wellness and growth. You are meant to experience joy and confidence in who you are and what you provide to the world. You were not created by accident and the value you bring to the table is priceless!
